This year for the first time I was able to go to Attwater’s Prairie Chicken Festival in Eagle Lake, Texas and had my program there. The festival draw many people around the country and also international visitors.

With 58 birds left at the refuge and 8 on the private land, Attwater’s Prairie-Chicken is one of the most endangered species in North America.

Although similar to its cousin, Greater Prairie-Chicken, Attwater’s is distinctive enough to be a subspecies.

I was also pleased to see many artworks of children participating in artwork contest this year.   These artworks of Attwater’s Prairie Chicken were through eyes of children.  Many of these children probably had never heard of prairie chickens before having to do these drawing.

It reminds me how important it is to raise awareness especially to the youngsters. We owe to our children the opportunities to enjoy this species.
